How to play

  • Use the arrow keys (or swipe) to move the tiles;
  • If two tiles of the same number (say X) collide while moving, they will merge into one (2X);
  • After each move, one tile randomly appears in an empty spot with a value of either 2 or 4;
  • You win when you reach the magical value of 2048. After that, you can choose if you want to continue playing with that board or play a new game;
  • The game ends when there are no legal moves (there are no empty spaces and no adjacent tiles with the same value).

Basic tips

  • Plan ahead before each movement;
  • Try to always keep the highest value tile at one of the corners.

The game 2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli, an Italian developer, and released in March 2014. The game was inspired by earlier titles like "1024" and "Threes." Cirulli made 2048 open-source, allowing other developers to modify the code and create their own versions. The game quickly gained popularity and went viral, becoming an internet phenomenon.

The basic mechanics of 2048 are simple: players slide numbered blocks on a 4x4 grid to combine like numbers and create a new block with double the value. The ultimate goal is to create a block with the number 2048. Although the concept is straightforward, the game is notably challenging and requires effective strategy to achieve high scores. Due to its popularity, the game has been adapted for various platforms, including mobile apps and browser versions, and continues to have a dedicated fan base.
