Friendship is a natural phenomenon that isn\u2019t even limited to people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite a natural inclination to being social, some people can have a more difficult time connecting with their peers than others. Just walk into a classroom and you\u2019ll recognize this within moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some outgoing individuals who are naturally full of pep and social competence and others that struggle a bit with it. While these differences and social skills are completely natural, the inability to make friends can be isolating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lacking social skills doesn\u2019t mean you don\u2019t want to have them. Luckily, even if you aren\u2019t born with superior social skills, you can learn how to make friends!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you want to do is make yourself <em>seem <\/em>more open to making friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I make myself more approachable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice that people aren\u2019t inviting you to plans or trying to get to know you \u2013 it probably has something to do with the \u201cvibes\u201d you are giving off. When you look like you are not interested in making friends, people will be less likely to approach you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some things you can do to make you look like an easy person to have a conversation with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Smile! <\/strong>\u2013 Research has found that facial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/222767916_Who_is_Approachable\">expressions<\/a> impact how approachable others perceive you to be. To make people more likely to approach you \u2013 try to convey positive emotions.<\/li><li><strong>Make eye contact <\/strong>\u2013 Making eye contact is a great way to establish a connection with somebody. Just make sure you don\u2019t stare too intensely or long as that can make people <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rsos.160086\">uncomfortable<\/a>.&nbsp; Moderation is key!<\/li><li><strong>Practice personal hygiene <\/strong>\u2013 People are more likely to approach someone clean and put together. If your clothes are torn up and you appear to be dirty, outsiders might perceive you as a threat and actively avoid you.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put yourself out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember though, taking all these things into consideration does not guarantee that potential friends will be flocking to you. Sometimes <em>you <\/em>will need to be the person who makes the first move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still keep the above recommendations in mind and try to be as friendly as possible so the people you approach will want to connect with you. Try to understand that sometimes people will want to say no, and that\u2019s ok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make a friendship last<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have a friend, you should take some simple steps to make sure that your friendships grow. There is always room for you to both cultivate new companionships and strengthen the relationships you always have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember \u2013 \u201cmake new friends but keep the old ones. One is silver and the other\u2019s gold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are sometimes unavoidable, organic reasons why friendships dissolve, you can take steps to keep your friendships going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, what you have to do is be a good friend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to be a good friend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a good friend means that you are active in a friendship when you can be \u2013 even when it\u2019s not fun. It means that you put effort into keeping your friendships alive! You need to prove that your friendships are a matter of fun and not just a mere matter of convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some traits of a good friend are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Someone who keeps in contact: <\/strong>Even if you can\u2019t always be there in person, emotional growth within a friendship is correlated with <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcmc\/article\/10\/1\/JCMC10111\/4614464\">non-verbal communication<\/a> as well. Send your friends messages every once in a while just to check in! Everyone appreciates seeing \u201cthis reminded me of you\u201d in their inbox.<\/li><li><strong>Be a good person:<\/strong> Being a positive person offers enough reason for someone to want to stay friends with you! Of course, there will be times where you can\u2019t be happy, but people don\u2019t like to hang around with someone who is always negative or brings them down.<\/li><li><strong>Stay through thick and thin<\/strong> \u2013 friendships are the family you choose. Sometimes, you need to help yourselves through tough times. This works both ways and there shouldn\u2019t be one person giving more than the other.
